DIY pumpkin pie spice, or Hawaij, with just 5 ingredients! This version includes cardamom for a floral, unexpected twist on the seasonal staple.
We’re transitioning fully into autumn over here at Baked with a 5 ingredient DIY pumpkin pie spice recipe! This is a [better] variation of the norm. It’s more Hawaij than pumpkin spice, because I add cardamom to just about everything (it deserves to be included).
If you want to go all American-style classic, omit the cardamom and use some allspice instead. BUT if you want a better taste experience then definitely embrace that floral cardamom. A more traditional Hawaij would probably use more cardamom than cinnamon. So, this is a mix between pumpkin spice and Hawaij!
Pumpkin pie spice is everywhere, I know, but I’ve never been such a fan of it until I tried adding cardamom. I also 1. hate pumpkin pie and 2. don’t drink coffee, so I guess I’m missing out on the best parts of pumpkin spice? The thing is, this DIY Hawaij can be used in just about anything that tastes good with a little extra spice. Try it with apple crumble, chocolate cake (seriously), in a smoothie or latte, or the obvious classic, pumpkin pie.
This easy mix needs just five ingredients, and you can easily double, triple, or octuple the recipe and store it in a jar with your other spices to keep it on hand. You don’t need the whole mix for our companion recipe to this, pumpkin spice breakfast cookies, so even if you just want a little but you won’t use the whole batch in one go.
My version is a mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves – easy on the cloves – cardamom, and dried ginger. Usually I’d go for fresh ginger but unfortunately it doesn’t keep very well stored with dry spices in a jar for an indefinite period.
So far there’s just one recipe on Baked with pumpkin pie spice – these vegan pumpkin cookies with a cream cheese glaze. Until we share some more, you can prep with a little DIY pumpkin spice blend, just in case.
