Cardamom Pumpkin Pie Spice and 20 Ways to Use It

DIY pumpkin pie spice with just 5 ingredients! This version includes cardamom for a floral, unexpected twist on the seasonal staple.

Spice mix in a small glass jar with a spoon in it, top down view.

This is a bit like a cross between pumpkin pie spice and sweet Hawaij (a Yemeni spice blend), because of the added cardamom and lack of allspice, and makes a wonderful slightly floral alternative to standard pumpkin pie spice.

Cardamom-scented pumpkin pie spice can be used in just about anything that tastes good with a little extra spice. Try it with our vegan carrot cake in place of the cardamom, in pumpkin cinnamon rolls, in a latte, or the obvious classic, pumpkin pie.

This easy mix needs just five ingredients, and you can easily double, triple, or octuple the recipe and store it in a jar with your other spices to keep it on hand. Our version is a mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves – easy on the cloves – cardamom, and dried ginger.

Ingredients

  • Cinnamon
  • Cardamom
  • Ground ginger
  • Nutmeg
  • Cloves
Pumpkin pie spice ingredients.

Method

Simple place all of the ingredients into a container or jar and mix until well combined. If you’re using whole spices, grind them very finely before mixing.

Store the mix as you would any other spices, in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dark, dry place. It will keep for a month or two if stored properly.

Tips and Notes

For maximum flavour, definitely grind your own spices! This is especially true for nutmeg and cardamom, which, like black pepper, both have significantly different flavour profiles when buying whole vs ground. Nutmeg can be grated with a very fine zester and cardamom can be ground in a mortar and pestle or (cleaned) coffee grinder.

This makes a really lovely gift, not only in the fall, but also right through winter. Think of it as something to add to any baking, and lots of drinks and other sweet recipes – not only recipes with pumpkin!

Substitutions

Play around with the amounts based on your personal preference, and add or leave out spices as you wish. Go a little more lebkuchen-esque with star anise and mace, or add a little white pepper for something closer to speculaas.
