In a slight variation on our traditional Tutorial Tuesday, we’re sharing a round-up of 10 of the most incredible pie recipes–just in time for the holidays!
I recently caught wind of a piece of musical theatre called Waitress, a show about an ace pie maker named Jenna who has a dream of opening her own bakery, but is faced with a slew of pretty heavy life challenges. As things unfold, a love story begins baking alongside her tasty pies. With the help of a wacky crew of fellow waitresses and loyal customers, Jenna develops the courage to follow her dreams. The story is funny, quirky, and heartwarming, with a solid feminist backbone. And throughout it, Jenna creates some hilariously-titled pies based on what’s going on her personal life. When we asked you what your funny pie name suggestions were on Instagram stories recently, you came up with these gems: Pied and Prejudice, Pie Hard, Apple of My Pie, Life of Pie, The Pie’s the Limit, The Pie Hole, PIEza Minelli, and Knotty. Thanks for the laughs, friends!
In a sideways kind of way, the story told in Waitress makes me think of team BAKED. We are ace female bakers/content creators, in our own right, who pour our hearts and souls into this platform. (If you could hear my tone, I say that in the humblest of ways.) We create content here each week alongside a myriad of other responsibilities, like trying build and develop our freelance businesses or grow our careers, contribute to and grow our own blogs, study, work, pay our mortgages/rent/grocery bills, etc., live beautiful, inspired, and balanced lives, be great, responsible mamas and/or partners and/or adults, and expand this platform into something that people turn to as a trusted resource for baking support and inspiration. We’re really no different than the rest of you, except we also write about baking. We do it because we love it, we appreciate your continued support, and we want to give you the best of what we have to offer.
One of the very best parts of being connected to this team is the overwhelming sense of community, support, and camaraderie that we share within the group. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times we’ve rallied around each other when working through individual or group projects, shared caring and thoughtful advice when one of us was being taken advantage of by a client or just happens to be having a terrible week, laughed our heads off in backroom conversations when we’re being torn apart on social media for the silliest things, and put our heads together to come up with what we hope will be the best content for you to enjoy. Like Jenna and her her team, team BAKED is also a bunch of funny, quirky, supportive, and heartwarming women with a feminist backbone. So while we don’t typically do posts of this nature, Waitress felt like a natural fit to share with you. It felt like it reflected us, and if feels like it also reflects many of you.
If you’re in New York and are planning your itinerary, consider checking it out. (Tickets are currently on sale through March 2019.) According to The New York Times, Waitress “rises to transporting heights and sweeps up your heart along with it”. And the Hollywood Reporter says it’s “a deep dish of feel-good feminist comfort food”.
But if the reviews aren’t what inspire you, maybe hearing about the success of other female creatives just might. I was truly thrilled to read this piece: “Waitress, has taken women’s impact on Broadway to a whole new level. the all-female creative team made history when in debuted on Broadway in 2016 to rave reviews. All four of the top creative roles are held by women, an accomplishment that makes it the very first Broadway shows to achieve this honor. With only a small fraction of women holding creative roles in Broadway shows (1 in 10 composers, authors, and directors according to Playbill Vault), Waitress is helping to shatter the glass ceiling that has hovered over the theater district for decades.” All the feelings for the women in the world who build each other up.
In honour of more badass women-identified bakers out there, we wanted to share a round-up of our favourite pie recipes. We’ll be back again on Thursday with a related (hint, hint!) and seasonally-inspired recipe; and we’re hosting a giveaway, too! So be sure to come back and say hi.
